The Legal Affairs Department actively provides legal consultation for government organizations, public institutions and enterprises, handles complaint, provides coordination and mediation for economic and trade disputes for domestic and overseas parties, offers consultation on fair trade,  antidumping and intellectual property rights, and participates in lawmaking activities. Meanwhile, it has established the "Shanghai Economic and Trade Frictions Warning Center" together with CCPIT headquarters, and operates"Shanghai SMEs Economic and Trade Frictions Service Platform",offering a combination of online and offline commercial legal services.

CCPIT Shanghai Mediation Center was established in February 1994. lt is a permanent organization dedicated to resolving domestic/foreign-related disputes arising out of commercial transactions. The Mediation Center has a panel of mediators from which parties may select for mediation. These mediators are professional and influential persons with background of foreign and domestic law, economy and trade,finance,legal profession, as well as social mediation. The Mediation Center has entered into cooperation agreements with counterparts from various countries.

As the first mediation organization in China to "Dock Litigation with Mediation"with the court system,the center has successively carried out prefiling mediation,appointed mediation,entrusted mediation and mediation by invitation of commercial disputes with courts at all levels in Shanghai.It took the lead in setting up offices including the mediation tribunal for the Pilot Free-Trade Zone and the mediation tribunal for the China International Import Expo.

In the process of mediation,the mediator shall respect the autonomy of the parties,follow international common practice,and adhere to the principles of objectivity,fairness and equitability,so as to encourage mutual understanding and accommodation between the parties for a lasting cooperative relationship and long-term interests.
